Update on Fall 2020 SportsSeptember 16, 2020

Today, Indian River Central School District joined other school districts in Jefferson County and the Sandy Creek Central School District, in making the difficult decision to postpone our participation in Fall 2020 interscholastic athletic competitions until March of 2021. In lieu of Fall interscholastic competitions, IRCSD will begin offering in-district intramural sports and other extracurricular activities in the coming weeks.

This decision was made after reviewing the parameters set forth by New York State for the allowance of lower risk school sponsored sports beginning September 21, as well as meetings with officials from Section III and the Frontier League. We have also consulted with local public health officials, physicians, school medical directors, students, parents, and the community at large before making this decision.

While we understand this decision may be heartbreaking for many students and their families as well as many in our community, the substantial risks associated with holding such events and the possibility that they may lead to COVID-19 outbreaks or exposure is too great to ignore.  Thanks to the hard work of our staff, students, families, and community, we have been able to start the 2020-21 school year with in-person learning.  We do not want that to be jeopardized.  Please know that your health and safety remain our top priority.

Later today, you will see a full Press Release from Jefferson County and Sandy Creek School Superintendents. This document includes much more detail regarding the background of this difficult decision, and I encourage you to read it carefully. As stated, local Superintendents look forward to the opportunity of returning our entire region, when it is safe and appropriate to do so, to participating in interscholastic activities and extracurricular events, both athletic and academic, at some point in this school year.

Please know that we greatly appreciate the support, and understanding shown by our families and community as we continue to consider all information and strive to make decisions that are best for our students, staff, and the entire region.

Please stay safe, stay healthy, and stay Warrior Strong!
