    Fire Safety & Smoke Alarms

    To our parents/guardians and community,

Safety is a top priority at Indian River and we want to take a moment to highlight an essential aspect of keeping our students, staff, and families safe: fire prevention and the importance of smoke detectors.  With inclement weather threatening to sidetrack some of our mid-winter break plans, many of us will be staying indoors by the heater, fireplace or woodstove, making this information all the more timely.

Fires can happen anywhere and at any time, making it crucial for all of us to be prepared. One of the most effective ways to prevent injury and loss during a fire is through properly functioning smoke detectors. These devices serve as early warning systems, giving people valuable time to evacuate safely.

Through the "Sound the Alarm/Save a Life" initiative, the American Red Cross offers installation of smoke detectors in residential homes free of charge.  There is no income requirement - anyone can take advantage of this program.  To register, please visit https://www.redcross.org/local/new-york/eastern-new-york/about-us/our-work/home-fire-campaign.html

    Additional Fire Safety Tips:

    1. Check Smoke Detectors Regularly: Ensure that smoke detectors are installed in key areas, such as hallways, bedrooms, and kitchens. Test them monthly and replace batteries at least every six months.
    2. Create and Practice an Escape Plan: At Indian River, we conduct regular fire drills to ensure that our students and staff are prepared for an emergency.  We encourage families to do the same at home and to discuss fire safety as a family.  Every home and school should have a fire escape plan that includes multiple exit routes. Practice fire drills regularly with your family, just as we do at school.
    3. Never Ignore an Alarm: If a smoke detector goes off, treat it as a real emergency. Leave the building immediately and call 911.
    4. Be Cautious with Electrical Appliances and Cords: Overloaded outlets and damaged cords can be fire hazards. Ensure all electrical devices are in good condition.
    5. Keep Flammable Materials Away from Heat Sources: Items like curtains, paper, and clothing should be kept away from stoves, heaters, and candles.
    6. Invest in a C.O. Detector: Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and undetectable by most standard smoke alarms (unless they are labeled as combination smoke and C.O. detectors).  A designated C.O. Detector can help alarm your family to the presence of a potentially deadly C.O. gas build-up.

By working together, we can create a safer environment for everyone, both at school and at home. Thank you for prioritizing fire safety and ensuring that our community remains protected.

From the Student Health Services department, we wish you a happy, healthy and safe mid-winter break!
    Chelsea Kolb MSN, FNP-C
    Director of School Health Services
