After working over the last month on a wide range of combinations of blade designs and gearing ratios to perfect their entries, on March 8th, three teams from Mr. Dusharm's Alternative Energy class traveled to SUNY Polytechnic in Utica for the STEM Exploration Showcase. There, they competed very successfully in the high school division of Wind Turbine Design, winning 1st, 3rd, and 4th place finishes. The first place team also won a separate judged award for "Innovation in Turbine Design" for their use of biodegradable 3D printed gears and PVC pipe as blade material. Their first place finish brings an automatic invitation to the Nationals, held in Chicago in May.
Their next competition will be on March 17th, at GE Headquarters in Schenectady, where they will face not only other schools, but also a slate of GE engineers who will quiz them on their knowledge of wind energy and turbine design.
