As I approach the final days of being a part of Indian River Central School District staff, I want to thank the board, community, and all employees of the District for making 41 years both enjoyable and rewarding. As a teacher, coach, administrator, and Superintendent, I have great memories of meeting and working with countless wonderful people who care about children and prioritize teaching and learning. I wish everyone all the best of health and happiness for many years to come.

Indian River FFA members honored at 93rd NYS FFA Convention in Rochester

Members of the Indian River FFA recently traveled to Rochester, NY for the 93rd New York State FFA Convention held on May 17-19th. The Ag Mechanics team placed 3rd in the State. Jared McConnell, Ryan Gleisner, Ethan Ruttan, and Nolan Drake were on the state 3rd placing team, while individually, Ethan Ruttan placed 6th and Ryan Gleisner 9th. The Food Science and Technology Team also placed 3rd with Erika Elcsisin, Emily Trudeau, Jillian Neaves and Taylor Scheer on the team. Individually, Jillian Neaves placed 3rd and Erika Elcsisin placed 9th. Indian River Freshman Connor Leeder entered maple syrup that he personally produced in the NYS Schoolyard Maple Contest and received 8th place honors. The convention concluded with Mr. Decker, Principal at Indian River High School, being recognized for his longstanding support of the Indian River FFA and Agriculture program by receiving his Honorary Empire Degree from the State FFA Association.

We are proud to announce that Indian River High School Theatre teacher Kristie Fuller is among a select group of teachers and artists who will form the Model Curriculum Framework Project of the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), a project supported by a National Endowment for the Arts grant. This is a tremendous honor for Kristie and for our Theatre program. Congratulations, Kristie!

Congratulations to Indian River High School Junior Jasmine Combs, who received a perfect score on her NYSSMA All State Flute audition! This is a tremendous honor. The All State audition is a state-wide competition, and it is extremely difficult to achieve a perfect score. K-12 Music Coordinator Charles Heck has only had two other students achieve this score during his 38-year teaching career, Amy Cameron in 1989, and Brittney O’Dett in 2014, both on the Flute. Be sure to congratulate Jasmine on a job well done!

For the eleventh consecutive year, Indian River Central School District has earned the Utica National Insurance Group School Safety Excellence Award. We are one of three school districts in the JLBOCES to receive the 2017 award at the “Titanium with Honors” level. Each year, the company recognizes school districts for their efforts as they work to help keep students, staff and visitors safe.

Alternative Energy Class teams win big at STEM Exploration Showcase at SUNY Polytechnic

After working over the last month on a wide range of combinations of blade designs and gearing ratios to perfect their entries, on March 8th, three teams from Mr. Dusharm's Alternative Energy class traveled to SUNY Polytechnic in Utica for the STEM Exploration Showcase. There, they competed very successfully in the high school division of Wind Turbine Design, winning 1st, 3rd, and 4th place finishes. The first place team also won a separate judged award for "Innovation in Turbine Design" for their use of biodegradable 3D printed gears and PVC pipe as blade material.

Calcium and Evans Mills Primary Schools will be hosting Open Houses for students enrolled in the new Universal Pre-Kindergarten classes that start January 8, 2018. The Evans Mills Primary Open House will be held Thursday, January 4th from 9:30-10:30AM for students enrolled in the AM session and 11:00AM-12:00PM for students enrolled in the PM session. The Calcium Primary Open House will be held Friday, January 5th from 9:30-10:30AM for students enrolled in the AM session and 11:00AM-12:00PM for students enrolled in the PM session.

Indian River High School Robotics teams receive top honors at FIRST Tech Challenge

Congratulations to both High School Robotics teams coached by Dr. Tyna Meeks and Mr. Dustin Burdick for their outstanding showing at the FIRST Tech Challenge held at Clarkson University on Friday, December 1, 2017. The two teams competed against teams from 10 other school districts. The robots had to perform tasks autonomously through programming and hand-controlled objectives. They also had to work in alliance with another team from a different school district.

On Saturday, November 4th, 260 Latin students competed at the New York State Junior Classical League Fall Festival at Pittsford-Sutherland High School in Pittsford. Indian River Central School District had a number of winners in both the individual and team competitions.

Indian River High School Resource Officer Deputy Carrie Mangino has organized a presentation/discussion entitled "Internet Safety for Parents" led by national speaker and expert Jesse Weinberger. Topics will include 'Understanding Social Media & Media Literacy,' 'Cyberbullying,' and more. Parents, guardians, and any interested community members are invited to attend. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25th from 6pm-8pm at the Indian River High School theatre.
