The Indian River Central School District uses the SchoolMessenger calling system to inform parents and staff members of any school emergencies, school-related cancellations, or non-emergency community engagement events.  The system works by delivering a prerecorded telephone message, text message, or e-mail to contacts specified by parents and staff members.

You can opt in to SchoolMessenger's free text messaging service to receive important information about Indian River Central School District events, school closings, safety alerts, and more.  Just send a text message of "Y" or "Yes" to our school's short code number, 67587.

Frequently Asked Questions:


How many numbers can I specify?  How do I change the numbers that are called?

We use the primary numbers specified with your child's enrollment information.  Phone numbers for SchoolMessenger are collected during the student registration process.  If you wish to change any information, please be sure to contact Central Registration at 315-642-3696. 


Can students sign up for notifications? 

No, only parents and guardians can sign up for notifications at this time. 


If I change my phone number or email address, how long does it take for that change to take effect?

It can take up to 24 hours for your contact information to be synced from Schooltool to SchoolMessenger.


How do I sign up for text messaging?


Parents and guardians may opt in to receive an SMS message to the wireless number the District has on file.  Just send a text message of "Y" or "Yes" to our school's short code number, 67587.  Parents can unsubscribe at any time by texting the word “Stop” to the same number.


Why haven't I received any email notifications?

Email should never be considered a reliable primary source for emergency notifications.  Many factors can affect the length of time between when the message is sent and when you receiving that message.  This is why our primary notification channel is voice, with email only serving as a supplementary channel of notification.  In addition, mass notification emails are sometimes also flagged as spam/bulk email, thus preventing immediate delivery to your inbox.


Why do you call some people and not others?

When an emergency affects some but not all members of the school population, only those affected will be notified.  If, for example, an elementary school must close due to a power failure, only the parents and staff members in that school will be notified.  This ensures that we're not unnecessarily notifying parents of situations that do not affect them.


I missed part of the message.  How do I listen to it again?

At any time during the message, you can restart it by pressing the "*" key on your phone.


Why is my answering machine recording only half of the message?

If your answering machine greeting contains periods of silence or does not start playing within three seconds, the system may read this as a live person and begin playing the message before the machine has started recording.

If your answering machine is set to record for a specific amount of time and the SchoolMessenger message runs longer than that, this will also result in message cut-off.

 

My caller ID showed that the school had called, but there was no voicemail. Why?

The system will ring a line up to six times.  If your answering machine is set to pick up on seven or more rings, the message may not be delivered to your machine.

In addition, if your voice mail greeting begins with "Hello", it may confuse the messenger system into thinking that it has reached a live human being.  When this happens, if your voice mail greeting is longer than the emergency message, the messenger system will recognize that it has played back the full emergency message and will not leave the emergency message on your voice mail.  If you also use a music service that plays a song prior to the call ringing to your phone, this can create the same issue.

 
Will the system call phone numbers with extensions?

SchoolMessenger cannot navigate phone menus and is unable to dial extensions.

 
I have a telemarketer screening device or service.  How will that affect the call?

These services prevent “unknown” calls from being delivered to your phone.  Emergency calls launched through SchoolMessenger will display the number of the school calling on the caller ID.  Parents can contact their phone company and request that the following numbers be added to their list of allowed callers:

I received a phone call/email from your district, but I don’t have any students in your district.  How can I get removed from your list?

If you receive phone calls or emails intended for our parents/guardians and would like to be removed from the SchoolMessenger contact list, please call Central Registration at 315-642-3696.
