1. January 9th status - While January 9th has been designated as a National Day of Mourning for President Carter and many Federal Government offices are closed (including parts of Fort Drum), New York schools will remain open—as per NYSED. Bus routes will remain the same with stops at the SACC and Fort Drum Youth Services buildings, or students may ride to/from their regularly-designated neighborhood bus stop. Pickup and dropoff times will remain consistent. Specific questions about your student’s bus stop or route can be directed to IRCSD Transportation at (315) 642-0331 or to our partners at Durham School Services at (315) 541-4477.
2. “Tis the Season”… for health reminders - Winter in the North Country brings colder weather, forcing many of us to gather indoors for longer periods. As a result, it also tends to bring an increase in colds, flu, and related illnesses. Taking proactive steps to protect your health is more important than ever, and we encourage everyone to wash their hands frequently with soap and water, use hand sanitizer when handwashing isn't an option, and disinfect high-touch surfaces like doorknobs, keyboards, and phones to reduce the spread of germs. As always, we promote adequate sleep, hydration, and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to support our immune systems, as well as staying up-to-date with recommended vaccinations. Finally, if you or your child are experiencing more than minor symptoms, please remain home to limit further spread of any sickness. As always, don’t hesitate to contact our amazing school nursing team with any questions. Let’s work together to make this winter a healthy and happy one!

Communication Platforms - Stay up-to-date on all things IRCSD by managing your communication preferences via ParentSquare (our main communication platform), BusRight (for transportation small-group/route-specific communications), and of course by checking the IRCSD website at www.ircsd.org. Our website includes links to academic calendars, concert and athletic schedules, school news updates, many resources for students and families, and much, much more.

Dear Parents:

At this time of year, it is a good idea to talk with your children about cold weather safety.  Extra care is needed especially in younger children to ensure that frostbite does not occur.

• Make sure all children including teenagers have appropriate outerwear every day. Warm jackets, hats, scarves, boots, and an extra pair of gloves in their pockets will protect them during extremely cold temperatures.
• Develop an emergency plan and review it with your children in case you are not home either before or after school. If a bus is delayed, they need to know where, when, and how to get help. Tell your child that if you are not home while they are waiting outside  for the bus, how long they may wait outside, where to go in the event the bus is  delayed, and what the dangers and risks of extreme weather are.

 
Advise your child to ask for help if they have:

• Wet clothing, boots or gloves, snow or ice next to bare skin which cannot be easily removed. 
• Pain, numbness and/or burning anywhere on their skin (especially hands, feet, ears, or nose).

 
Teach your child:

• When to ask for help.
• Where to find safe shelter in an emergency.
• Who the designated adult is to go to in your neighborhood if the bus does not show on time.
• How to protect themselves with proper winter clothing.
